Geschiedenis:
Gebouwd als proefstation voor de wetenschappelijke keuring van bouwmaterialen van de firma Koning en Bienfait, naar ontwerp van Berlage. Dezelfde architect voegde in 1908 twee bouwlagen toe: de verdieping met het grote raam en de zolder. Daarbij verdween de typisch Berlagiaanse borstwering.
Het bedrijf was in 1890 opgericht en begon in het gebouw van de H.IJ.S.M. aan het Droogbak.
De naam Koning en Bienfait staat nog altijd op de gevel aan de Da Costakade. Het bedrijf vertrok vermoedelijk in de jaren 1990.
Berlage en de werktuigkundige L. Bienfait waren familie: de architect was in 1887 getrouwd met Marie Bienfait.

History:
Built as a testing station for the scientific testing of building materials by the firm Koning en Bienfait, based on a design by Berlage. The same architect added two stories in 1908: the first floor with the large window and the attic. The typical Berlage parapet was removed in the process. The company was founded in 1890 and began operations in the H.IJ.S.M. building on Droogbak.
The name Koning en Bienfait still appears on the facade on Da Costakade. The company likely left in the 1990s.
Berlage and the engineer L. Bienfait were related: the architect married Marie Bienfait in 1887.
